Coherence measurements with the two-photon Michelson interferometer

چکیده
The interference of entangled photon pairs permits the study of the fundamental properties of quantum mechanics. The process is also finding practical applications in optical imaging. The Michelson interferometer provides an elegant means for characterizing the degree of two-photon entanglement, but the technique has not yet been described and analyzed in detail. Here we provide a full description of the interference of collinear down-converted photons in a Michelson interferometer. We explain the basic elements that characterize the interference pattern and complement the theory with experimental measurements. The two-photon Michelson interferometer can be used in quantumoptical coherence tomography for dispersion-free imaging and localization.

Quantum-optical coherence tomography with collinear entangled photons.
Quantum-optical coherence tomography (QOCT) combines the principles of classical OCT with the correlation properties of entangled photon pairs [Phys. Rev. A 65, 053817 (2002)]. The standard QOCT configuration is based on the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer, which uses entangled photons propagating in separate interferometer arms. This noncollinear configuration imposes practical limitations, e.g....
متن کاملElectrically switchable cylindrical Fresnel lens based on holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals using a Michelson interferometer
Fabricating an electrically switchable cylindrical Fresnel lens based on holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (H-PDLC) using a Michelson interferometer is reported. Simplicity of the method and possibility of fabricating different focal length lenses in a single set up are among the advantages of the method. It is demonstrated that the Fresnel structured zone plate acts as a cylindrica...
متن کاملUltrafast partial measurement of fourth-order coherence by HBT interferometry of upconversion-based autocorrelation.
We introduce, analyze, and experimentally demonstrate a compact semiconductor-based scheme for a femtosecond-scale partial fourth-order coherence g((4)) measurements. The scheme is based on a start-stop photon-counting Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) interferometry of an upconversion-based Michelson-interferometer autocorrelation. The experimental realization employs second-harmonic generation in...
متن کاملStatistical properties of frequency shifted feedback lasers
We evidence experimentally the statistical properties of frequency shifted feedback (FSF) lasers through measurements of the homodyne beat signal and interferometric autocorrelation of a dye FSF laser at the output of a Michelson interferometer. The FSF laser is found to show thermal fluctuations and photon bunching. Moreover whereas the degree of first-order coherence vanishes beyond the coher...
متن کاملRole of beat noise in limiting the sensitivity of optical coherence tomography.
The sensitivity and dynamic range of optical coherence tomography (OCT) are calculated for instruments utilizing two common interferometer configurations and detection schemes. Previous researchers recognized that the performance of dual-balanced OCT instruments is severely limited by beat noise, which is generated by incoherent light backscattered from the sample. However, beat noise has been ...
